Netflix announced on Thursday, March 24 that the streaming platform would be producing the film adaptation of the bestselling novel ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

It is reported that Liz Tigelaar, creator of the TV series Little Fires Everywhere and Casual, is tapped to write the screenplay for the novel.

The novel, published in 2017 by Atria Books, became a crowd’s favorite, thanks to the BookTok, the side of TikTok, which talks about book reviews and recommendations.

The novel follows the story of fictional reclusive Hollywood star Evelyn Hugo, who gave an interview to Monique Grant, an unknown journalist who works for a magazine.

At the age of 79, Hugo tells Grant her life story, including her time in the Golden Age of Hollywood, her rise to fame, and her seven marriages which are indeed a rollercoaster ride as it is filled with numerous emotional secrets and lies. Through it all, the readers will come to think about who is Evelyn Hugo’s greatest love among her husbands and why she chose Monique to interview and write her final confession.

Liza Chasin will produce the film adaptation for the book for 3Dot Productions and Brand Mendelsohn for Circle of Confusion. The upcoming Netflix film continues the streaming platform’s creative partnership with Liza Chasin and 3Dot Productions.

The executive producers for this film adaptation would be Margaret Chernin and the author herself, Taylor Jenkins Reid.

The book has garnered positive reviews from its critics and gained recognition from its nomination in the Goodreads Choice Award for Best Historical Fiction of 2017 and a nominee for Book of the Month’s Book the Year Award in 2017.

Before Netflix’s announcement, the novel was previously picked up in 2019 for production by Freeform, and Fox 21 Television Studios, wherein Reid was also to serve as the screenwriter. Reid revealed in 2021 that Freeform no longer owns the rights for development.

There are no further details about the upcoming film adaptation of the novel since it is in its early development stage. For now, the book fans can only rejoice and drop their suggestions on who would be the cast that would bring the novel characters to life.
